So You Want To Help?

There's a ton of information out there right now. Since I'm in MD and from Baltimore, that's where my focus is. So if you're local, or not, but you want to help support local non profits and charities or programs that directly help those who need it, I'm making a list.

This is NOT a complete list. There are a lot of people doing really great things. If you know of one that I've missed, please mention it in the comments and I'll add it.

I know that sometimes we don't have time to volunteer, or sometimes we do but we don't have money to donate, or maybe we don't have either of those, but we want to do SOMETHING. This list is a list of a combo. You can donate money or volunteer to most of these, but there's also several places that need items, and you can help in that way, too.

So, in no particular order, but slightly organized, here you go.

Helping Black Youth and Communities.

Oritas Cross Freedom School http://www.oritascross.com/home.html
Oritas Cross is a school that accepts children ages 6 and up (sometimes younger), in Baltimore City that is open when Baltimore City schools are closed for professional days and some holidays. This is huge. For most parents that are struggling, having to stay home on a day when you'd have to go to work can mean keeping your job or losing it. A lot of low income parents rely on schools being open so that they CAN go to work, and a school that is open when public schools aren't is a lifesaver.

Associated Black Charitieshttp://www.abc-md.org/
ABC works on many fronts, to help address and raise awareness of inequalities that face black people in MD. They work on housing, school, health and employment, among other things. They work on both helping people and trying to effect policy changes that will provide more equality.
(Accepts Volunteer and Monetary Donations)

Bmore United is a grassroots coalition that works to create change for black people in baltimore. They partner with places that help to care for children when schools are closed, they have also provided bail support for individuals that were unable to pay.

Helping Refugees and Immigrants

International Rescue Committeehttps://www.rescue.org/united-states/baltimore-md
The IRC works directly with refugees in order to provide them with what they need in order to build a life here. They assist with finding schooling and employment and homes.
They accept Monetary and Volunteer donations, and they also accept items at specific times, new or gently used.
Here is the current list, though they are unable to accept donations until after March 1st.

This is a list of specific requests for volunteers to help refugees and refugee children in MD. From teaching English to sewing, art, and tutoring.

Refugee Youth Projecthttp://www.refugeeyouthproject.org/
RYP is a Baltimore City Community College program that provides after school and community activities for students from other countries.
They look for Tutors, Mentors, and Interns, and they also have information for starting a RYP partnership.

Helping in Other, Specific Ways
